The Process
The product development process starts with the customer's idea.  The MCM Design team can help you through the following "phases" of the process. 

Marketing

  • Define the marketing needs
  • Evaluate the competition
  • Start the patent application process
  • Sign a non-disclosure agreement to keep the idea out of the public domain

Industrial Design

  • Conduct market research to place the product in a category with the competition
  • The products ergonomics and looks are enhanced
  • A basic 3D CAD model is created to show the team what the product will look like
  • A model may be built

 

 

   Engineering

  • Gross decisions will be discussed regarding the manufacturing processes to be used
  • A 3D CAD engineering model will be created
  • A physical model will be built to prove out form, fit and function
  • Draft and details for manufacturing are added to the 3D CAD model
  • Procurement of tooling and manufacturing quotes

 

 Manufacturing

  • A manufacturer is selected
  • A tooling order is placed, guided by the manufacturer

 Sales and Marketing

  • Distribution of the product

  

 

Product development requires a team of experts in several disciplines to overlook all phases of the process.  Sometimes during the product development process design issues arise that need to be re-worked, or perhaps a whole new direction needs to be taken.
 
This is a normal part of the product development process.
Remember....Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb on his first try!
